Class will meet next Sunday, November 22.
Last time, we completed the second chapter of Theology of the Body for Teens and began on chapter 3. Key points:
- The opposite of love is use, i.e. treating a person as a thing.
- You can test the quality of a relationship based upon this difference between giving and using.
- Lust is a way of using rather than loving a person.
- Shame is (negatively) a consequence of sin, but also (positively) a desire to protect the good of one's person from lust.
- To be "shameless" is to fail to recognize the value of oneself as a person with dignity, and therefore to not protect that precious good.
- Only within the commitment of marriage is it truly possible to be "naked without shame."
Quote to ponder from CS Lewis:
“What is a lizard compared with a stallion? Lust is a poor, weak, whimpering, whispering thing compared with that richness and energy of desire which will arise when lust has been killed.” ~ this quote comes from the parable of the little red lizard in C.S. Lewis's book The Great Divorce.
At home assignment:
- "Digging Deeper: Naked Without Shame?" on pages 44-46.
- (Optional) Read the parable of the Little Red Lizard by CS Lewis. It is available online in several places, including at this link.
If you missed missed class or want to review:
Please read Chapter 2, To The Core, pages 26-28 of the workbook. Also the assignment, above.
Open Mic class:
If you have a question for the "open mic" class session, please email it or write me a note. I have small note papers and a question box available in class. This is an opportunity to ask other faith-related questions.
