Our next class will be Sunday, December 15.
(No class this Sunday, the 8th.)
Last time:
"Triple Entry Journal - Abortion" handout: We worked together to apply the 6 Principles of Happiness to come up with good pro-life responses to common arguments in support of abortion. These responses are only a beginning, applying the principles we have learned so far. We will further solidify the pro-life case as we study more principles -- of truth and reason, ethics and justice.
I also shared some data from scientific studies that show that, contrary to a common argument in favor of abortion, women are on average significantly more unhappy after an abortion. Please see the resources post at the blog for some informational fact-sheets with detailed references. I've also included the bonus video I showed in class in response to the "burning fertility clinic" scenario, an attempt to paint pro-life people as hypocrites.
The class watched and discussed a video based on interviews with Morrie Schwartz, who suffered from Lou Gehrig's disease. Although Morrie had been an agnostic most of his life, facing the reality of his terminal illness and the nearness of death brought him to a belief in God. He had some beautiful words of wisdom to share and clearly valued the time he had left in this life, even through his suffering.
Next time, we'll practice responding to pro-euthanasia arguments using the 6 Principles.
Homework:
- Consider: How do abortion, euthanasia, and physician-assisted suicide add to our culture's obsession with a Level 1 or 2 view of happiness? How about a L1 or 2 view of success? Quality of life? Love?
- Also, please take a few minutes to review your "Triple Entry Journal" handout and write your comments in the "My thoughts" column.
If you missed the class or want to review, please use the resources post at the blog to flesh out the summary above. There are links to the video, definitions of terms, factsheets, and more. If you would like the video discussion questions and class handout sent to you, please contact me.
